Bottled Water

Recently I seen on Lakeland PTV that Bemidji State University student government decided to recommend banning sale of bottled water on campus.

I think the intent is good, however there can be unforeseen consequences.
I use filtered water instead of bottled water most of the time. The water from the faucet is usually as good a quality as bottled water anyway. It has less waste. Less transporting of water and bottles. Less weight to carry.

The potential problems are:
There needs to be adequate drinking fountains and other ways of getting good or better water than bottled. In Brainerd, we had a boil order last summer so I ended up using more bottled water.
There also needs to be enough areas where people can wash or sterilize their reusable bottle or cups. Bacteria and other microbes build up on reusable cups and bottles.
Another problem is if someone chooses a more unhealthy drink such as pop, coffee, or otherwise that still has a disposable container.

Another thing to think about: although reduce and reuse come first in the 3 Rs, Plastic bottles are still recyclable and can be made into things like reusable shopping bags and clothing.

I'm not a student at Bemidji nor live there but these are things to consider before a place decides to do this.
